Red Bull Unveils RB17 Hypercar: The 1,200-HP V10 Masterpiece Limited to 50 Units

Red Bull Advanced Technologies revealed its intention to build the hypercar in June 2022. The F1-inspired car made its debut two years later at the 2024 Goodwood Festival of Speed. The hypercar, which is named the RB17 as per their F1 car naming scheme, looks impressive and is expected to have exceptional performance.

The Red Bull 17, which was developed entirely in-house, resembles a World Endurance Championship prototype racer in terms of design. Its massive front splitter, rear wing/diffuser assembly, canopy-style cabin, sculpted fenders, and V-shaped nose give it the look of a hypercar-class racer, similar to the Porsche 963 and Ferrari 499P. It also features F1 aero components, giving it a more aggressive look overall.

Thanks to a carbon-fiber monocoque chassis, the RB17, which was designed by Adrian Newey, the engineer responsible for creating F1 cars for Red Bull, McLaren, and Williams that won 12 constructors’ championships, weighs less than 900 kg (1,984 lbs). For comparison, it weighs 100 kg (220 lbs) less than an endurance racer in the Hypercar class. Plus, it weighs just 102 kg (225 lbs) more than the RB20 F1 vehicle. Amazing!

A mid-mounted, semi-stressed V10 engine powers the RB17. With a redline of 15,000 rpm, the naturally aspirated engine produces an incredible 1,200 horsepower. Torque values have not yet been released by Red Bull. The hypercar, according to the business, will achieve lap times comparable to an F1 racer and a top speed of over 350 kilometers per hour (217 mph).

Red Bull will only build 50 of these, so by the end of the Goodwood Festival of Speed weekend, I wouldn’t be surprised to hear they’re all sold out. According to the company, each RB17 will be customized to the customer’s specifications, including the interior and “many small details.”

A unique customer program will be included with each car, which will include various track events at famous circuits around the world. As of this writing, additional details are still being kept secret, but it looks like the RB17 will be a million-dollar rig.

“The RB17 hypercar embodies our core values: undeniable power, swiftness, and elegance. It is very adaptable in its capabilities, and we made sure to design it as a two-seater so that the thrill of driving at F1 speeds can be enjoyed with a friend or partner,” said Adrian Newey, who will leave Red Bull in early 2025.

Newey did not design the RB17 as his first road vehicle. Additionally, he was the mind behind the Aston Martin Valkyrie, which will make its debut in 2025 as the Le Mans Hypercar, and the AMR Pro version, which is limited to racetracks. Although it’s too early to say for sure, the RB17 could go the same way.

With the Valkyrie and the RB17, Newey joins an elite group of Formula One designers who have also created road cars. Rudolf Uhlenhaut (Mercedes-Benz 300SL), Colin Chapman (Lotus), and Gordon Murray (McLaren F1) are on this list.
